
The play
In February 2016, JAMA Pediatrics published Anna Sosa's study, Association of the Type of Toy Used During Play With the Quantity and Quality of Parent-Infant Communication. Sosa, then at Northern Arizona University, recruited 26 parent-infant pairs, the infants aged 10 to 16 months, and recorded 15-minute home play sessions with three toy sets in turn: electronic toys, traditional toys such as blocks and shape sorters, and picture books. The design let the same families be compared against themselves across toy type, rather than comparing different families to one another.
What the evidence says
The study counted adult words, child vocalizations, conversational turns, parental responses to a child's utterance, and specific content words spoken per minute. During electronic-toy play, parents produced fewer words (mean 39.62 per session versus higher counts with the other toy types), fewer conversational turns, fewer responses to the infant, and fewer content-specific words than during play with traditional toys or books; infants also vocalized less with electronic toys than with books. A companion invited commentary in the same issue, indexed as Keeping Children's Attention: The Problem With Bells and Whistles, confirms the study ran in that JAMA Pediatrics issue and was read by the journal's editors as evidence bearing on electronic toys and attention, though the commentary itself is a discussion piece, not new data.
Age fit and safety
Sosa's own sample was 26 dyads with infants aged 10 to 16 months studied in 2013 to 2014, and her conclusions are stated for that age band and that toy comparison, not for toddlers, preschoolers, or toy types outside the three tested. The paper is silent on any hazard question; it measures communication quantity and quality, not choking risk or material safety, and it makes no claim about long-term language outcomes beyond the recorded sessions.
What to look for
Editorially, the finding is a reason to notice what happens during play rather than a reason to remove every electronic toy from a shelf: the study's own conclusion recommends traditional toys as a valuable alternative specifically when book reading is not a preferred activity, not a blanket rule against electronics. A caregiver can use the measured behaviors themselves, such as counting how often a toy prompts a word exchange, as a working test with any single toy in the home.
- During play with this toy, is an adult talking and responding, or is the toy doing most of the narrating?
- Would swapping in a book or a simple traditional toy change how much back-and-forth happens?
- Is this small study's 10-to-16-month sample actually the age of the child being bought for?
The study's real contribution is a measurement habit, not a verdict on a toy category: it shows that toy type can shift how much language passes between a parent and an infant in a recorded session, and it leaves open how that plays out with different toys, ages, and homes than the 26 it studied.
