The play

In a 2021 issue of the journal Early Years, Amy MacDonald and Steve Murphy of Charles Sturt University published Mathematics Education for Children under Four Years of Age: A Systematic Review of the Literature. The review gathers peer-reviewed research specifically on children younger than four engaging with number, shape, and pattern, a group the authors note is usually left out of studies that start at age four and up.

What the evidence says

Most of the identified studies took place in early childhood settings such as preschools or day care centers, using task-based interviews and standardized assessments as their main methods.   • Is a 'math skills' claim citing a specific study of children under four, or borrowing the word from older-child research?
  • Is the caregiver comfortable naming numbers and shapes during ordinary play, where the review says the real opportunity lies?

The review is evidence that mathematical thinking begins earlier than casual assumptions suggest, not evidence that any specific toy accelerates it; the mechanism it actually points to is the adult's own engagement.
